Wine & Beer Tasting!! What a delightful idea! I think it’s my childhood love of “sample day” at the grocery store reincarnated. Just as I looked forward to finding the best snack sample, in my adult life, I can peruse a variety of wine and beer and determine which will be my social partner for the coming months.

There’s no doubt that buying wine and craft beer can be intimidating. Will that beer really taste like oranges? Will the $7 bottle of wine be a disappointment? Will the $20 bottle not mesh with your taste? And we all know that the descriptions on the label often leave something to be desired (what does a Tanin taste like, anyway?!?).

Why not spend an evening figuring it all out? Try a variety of wine to figure out which flavors mesh best with your palate, learn some fancy wine lingo, or simply become more comfortable with the subject matter. As an added bonus, learn how to pair wine and beer with different foods – and try the foods too. (I TOLD you it’s my childhood love reincarnated!)

Keep an eye out for regular tastings at the Silo or in the Courtyard. We hope to keep you up to date with the best flavors of the seasons.

Well, we’re just over 2 weeks into the New Year. How are those resolutions coming along? As I sit here and nibble on a giant brownie, I’m wondering if other people are as weak as I am. Healthy eating? Ha! Have you tried our desserts?? But not everyone is a sweet tooth like myself. So what is it that you can’t resist? A crunchy bowl of chips? That perfectly cooked slice of pizza? Or a mouth watering slice of prime rib?

Don’t get me wrong, there are days when nothing sounds better than a cool, crisp salad, but we don’t scold ourselves for those choices. How nice would it be if I were honestly more attracted to salad than sweets. Sigh. I have a long way to go.

To those of your still on the resolution band wagon, keep up the good work! If you’ve fallen off, there is still time to hop back on (though I suggest waiting until AFTER the Super Bowl parties are over). Otherwise, feel free to join me. I’d be happy to share a slice of cheesecake with you!

Until next time…

Here in Allegan, we are a sharp contrast to the crowded streets and live music of Times Square, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a great place to ring in the New Year! Grab your signifigant other, best friends, or closest family members and rent a cabin on one of the many surrounding lakes, or hole up at a cozy B&B. Enjoy a relaxing dinner here at the Grill House with some festive drink specials and homemade desserts, then spend the waning hours of 2011 walking around the snow covered streets and boardwalk of Allegan. Retreat back to your room for some warm drinks and laughter as you reflect back on a wonderful year and forge ahead into 2012!

I’ll leave you with the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne (Times Gone By) – Happy New Year!!

Should old acquaintances be forgotten,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintances be forgotten,
And days of long ago!

Chorus:
For times gone by, my dear
For times gone by,
We will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by.

We two have run about the hillsides
And pulled the daisies fine,
But we have wandered many a weary foot
For times gone by.

We two have paddled (waded) in the stream
From noon until dinner time,
But seas between us broad have roared
Since times gone by.

And there is a hand, my trusty friend,
And give us a hand of yours,
And we will take a goodwill drink (of ale)
For times gone by!

And surely you will pay for your pint,
And surely I will pay for mine!
And we will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by!

If there is one thing people in Michigan know well, it’s WINTER!! Freezing temps, hats & mittens, and piles of snow! So it should be no surprise that our local breweries have turned out some great beer that is perfect for this season. In contrast to refreshing, Summer beers, Winter beers tend to be darker, heavier, and more robust than their warm weather friends, which make Porters and Stouts excellent choices. You’re likely to find heavy flavors of chocolate and coffee – perfect for a cozy drink by the fireside!

Founders Porter, for example, has flavors of chocolate and caramel which keep it silky smooth and full of flavor. Goose Island, Mild Winter Ale is another option out of Chicago for those looking to drink in the flavors of the season. Ask your bartender for more information about these seasonal drinks!!

Not a beer drinker?? Have no fear!! Your bar tender would be happy to create a cold-weather drink to match your taste – Bailey’s and coffee, hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps, a peppermint patty martini, or anything else that suites you! Cheers!!

Our resident ghost, Jack, is certainly an object of speculation among our guests. Several times a week, we will be asked, “Where’s Jack?” My personal preference is that we let sleeping dogs lie, but for those looking to have “contact” with our tenured guest, the world wide web offers the following advice:

* There’s an App for that! Several ghost-seeking apps have been created for smart phones users to help you pick up on changes in the surrounding electromagnetic field, vibrations, and sounds that may indicate paranormal activity!
* Ouija Boards – a classic favorite to make contact with those who have passed on. Nothing like a little board game after dessert!
* Click! Mysterious “orbs” are frequently seen in photos taken throughout the restaurant. Are they spirits, or just an allergy hazard??

Have you ever seen Jack?? We would love to hear your stories!
